Dr. Franc Mali is Professor for Sociology and Epistemology of Science at the University of Ljubljana. He is lecturer for the following courses at The Faculty of Social Sciences (University of Ljubljana): Social and Ethical Aspects of Modern Science, Sociology of Science, Epistemology of Science. He is the the head of Centre for Social Studies of Science at The Faculty of Social Sciences (University of Ljubljana). He was visiting research fellow at Institute for Advanced Studeis on Science, Technology and Society in Graz (IAS -STS research fellowship in Februray- April 2004, in May – June 2009 and September 2013), University Bielefeld (DAAD fellowship in October – December 1998), University Klagenfurt (Alpe-Adria fellowship in February – May 1994), University Johannes Kepler in Linz (Alpe-Adria fellowship in January – May 1992) and at University of Vienna ( ARRS fellowship in October – December 1989). His recent research is focused on the problems of social networks in science and scientometrics, R&D evaluation, the social and ethical regulation of new emerging technologies, the role of intermediary structures in science. Since 1990 he worked as principal investigator in various basic and applied research projects financed by Slovenian Research Agency or Slovenian Ministry of Science. From 1999 – 2007 he was the board member of SSTNET (The Sociology of Sociology and Technology Research Network) at the European Sociological Association (ESA). He is a member of a lot of other professional association at national and European level (EASST, head of The Section for Sociology of Science in Slovenian Sociological Association, Section for Philosophy of Science in Slovenian Philosophical Association, etc.) He is the member of editorial board of EASST journal Science & Technology Studies. He was involved with his research group as partner in the following international research projects as well: PHARE Multi-Country Programme in Higher Education, 5th CRE Academic Task Force - Capacity Building and Human Resources Development Measures for Higher Education, ESA Project International Network on Social Capital and Performance, 7 EU FP Feasibility Study for creating a European University Data Collection 7 EU FP Ethics in Public Policy-Making: the Case of Human Enhancement. He participated as the member of external expert groups for evaluation of higher education and research institution in various countries: Latvia, Estonia, Macedonia, Bosnia. He was active as expert evaluator in Sixth EU Framework Program.
