The contributions document results from the project "Engineering Life: An interdisciplinary approach to the ethics of synthetic biology" that was funded by the German Ministry of Research and Education. They consider the metaphors and notions employed in the field of synthetic biology, but also the social and legal ramifications, ethical aspects and risks and opportunities.
