University of Ljubljana

The University of Ljubljana is the oldest and largest higher education and research institution in Slovenia, and the Faculty of Social Sciences is the largest social science institution in the country.

In SYN-ENERGENE, the work will be carried out by the Centre for Social Studies of Science (CSSS). The CSSS is primarily engaged in the social studies of science and technology, especially the study of various ethical, legal and societal dimensions of novel scientific and technological developments, both internationally and in Slovenia. It was founded in 1982, and is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana (Slovenia). The CSSS mostly conducts theoretical and empirical research in the sociology, cultural aspects and policy studies of science and technology. We also have extensive expertise in the areas of the science-society relationship: the ethical, legal and societal aspect and implications of novel scientific and technological developments, as well as their risks, the mechanisms of scientific output evaluation, the role of expert knowledge in science and technology policymaking, R&D and innovation policies, young researcher mobility, collaboration practices among scientists, the bibliometrics of science, knowledge transfer from the academic to the business-enterprise sector, intermediary structures, etc. Our recent research projects have focused on topics such as societal aspects of human enhancement, cognitive enhancement, synthetic biology and neurotechnology, (bio)ethics in science and technology policymaking, national ethics committees, public engagement practices, collaboration networks in science, R&D evaluation and bibilometrics, and the integration of responsible research and innovation into practice. We regularly transfer our research results into the teaching processes at the Faculty of Social Sciences, present our results to interested publics, and develop various types of expert cooperation with different clients and stakeholders in Slovenia.

The Centre is involved through contributions to the Platforms Public Science & Participation and Research & Policy.
