National Academies Explore Ethics of Human Genome Editing

The National Academies Press released a prepublication of the report on “Human Genome Editing: Science, Ethics and Governance”. An expert committee of the Academies of Science and of Medicine prepared it. They consider the issues raised by therapeutic uses of innovative genome editing techniques, including treatment of genetic defects in patients’ cells outside the body (ex vivo), for re-implantation inside the body. These are deemed the least risky, given the opportunities for testing the modified cells before putting them back in the body. In vivo treatment could be less effective or even be dangerous to the health of the patient, if the targeting of the genetic modification fails. Germline changes may only be considered in exceptional cases, and for the time being, the techniques should be limited to therapeutic uses.
