Perspectives and Key Issues in Synthetic Biology: Opportunities, Risks and Policies

Date:
18/06/2015 - 9:00 to 19/06/2015 - 14:00

Joint stakeholder meeting and workshop on "Perspectives and Key Issues in Synthetic Biology", organized by the  University of Ljubljana and the University of Padua in Ljubljana, Slovenia

The meeting and workshop will bring together different stakeholders groups connected with Synthetic Biology (SB), such as scientists and researchers, experts, policymakers, business and industry, the media and civil society organizations from the countries of the region, including Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Croatia, Serbia and Hungary. The first day will feature internationally recognized experts as speakers who will present some of the key issues in SB, including developmental challenges, biosafety and biosecurity issues, public perceptions and communication, innovation and socioeconomic impacts, and strategies for responsible research and innovation. The second day will be interactive, organized with discussions around selected key topics and issues, where the participants will be able to discuss these and other issues with the speakers and other experts, as well as voice their own views and concerns.

The aim of engaging various stakeholders in dialogue and mutual learning is to achieve a better common understanding of various aspects of the field and to move towards the collaborative shaping of future policies and governance approaches for SB at the national, regional and international level. This should raise awareness and engagement, and start public discussions on SB in the region, ultimately helping to place the field higher on the research policy agenda in the involved countries.
